Nanchang University is a national “211 Project” key construction university jointly established by Jiangxi Provincial People’s Government and the Ministry of Education and also a university selected by “National Comprehensive Strength Improvement Plan of Western and Central China” and “National Basic Ability Construction Project of Western and Central China.

Nanchang University is located in Nanchang City, Jiangxi Province which enjoys the good reputation of “a city of splendid resources and outstanding people” and “a hero city”. Enjoying flourish Xishan Mountain and floating clouds of Nanpu, surrounded by mountains and waters and covered by green shades, Nanchang University possesses beautiful surroundings and is an ideal place to pursue studies. Nanchang University is composed of 5 campuses including Qianhu, Qingshanhu, Donghu, Poyanghu and Fuzhou campuses. Among 5 campuses, Qianhu main campus covers an area of over 4,500 mu (300.15 hectares) and the construction area of its school buildings is 1,300,000 square meters.

Nanchang University has it origins way back in 1921 with the beginning of the Jiangxi Public Medical School and National Chung-cheng University in 1940. In 1993, Jiangxi University and Jiangxi Industrial University amalgamated into Nanchang University which ushered in a new era of national higher education system reform. In 2005, Jiangxi Medical College merged with Nanchang University, which opened up a brand new situation of its reform development. National and party leaders, Ministry of Education, Jiangxi provincial committee and government highly value the construction and development of the university. Central leaders including Xi Jinping, Zeng Qinhong, Wu Guanzheng, Liu Yanking, Meng Jianzhu inspected this university successively, and Xi Jinping believes that “Nanchang University will have a promising future”.

With a total of 37,092 full-time undergraduate students, 13,116 graduate students and 770 overseas students, the main campus of the school has a staff of 4,764 (including 3,168 full-time teachers, 1,593 professors and associate professors and 91 foreign teachers), among whom there are four double employed academicians, one chief scientist of national “973 Program”, three persons selected by national “The Recruitment Program of Global Experts”, five winners of “The National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars”, six specially-appointed professors of “Chang Jiang Scholars Program”, one national excellent advisor of doctoral theses, one national outstanding teacher, eleven persons of “National Hundred, Thousand and Ten Thousand Talent Project”, one winner of “The National Science Fund for Outstanding Young Scholars”, one member of the Discipline Appraisal Group of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, two members of the Science and Technology Committee of the Ministry of Education as well as twelve persons of “Supported by Program for New Century Excellent Talents in University” of the Ministry of Education. After the national model teacher Shi Qiujie, there emerged a batch of representatives advocating professional ethnics and dedicating themselves to work including Zou Defeng who won the highest honor of international nursing profession “Nightingale Medal”.

Attaching great importance to internationalized school-running mode, the school has successively established a stable relationship of exchange and cooperation with more than one hundred universities and scientific research institutions from over 30 countries (regions), founded Confucius Institutes in University of Poitiers of France and Universitas Hasanuddin of Indonesia and set up United Laboratory of Food Science and Technology with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. In 2014, the school was listed as an experimental college of higher education comprehensive reform in Jiangxi Province, which was a milestone in school history. Standing on a new starting point of development, Nanchang University will follow the educational philosophy of “establishing school by scholarism, strengthening school by talents and managing schooling by law”, adhere to the development idea of “strengthening disciplines, perfecting management, benefiting people’s livelihood and advocating industriousness”, emancipate the mind, builds consensus, deepen the reform and endeavors to march towards the goal of developing into a high-level comprehensive university with distinct regional characteristics.
